We grew up the way a lot of kids did: gone after breakfast, home when the streetlights flickered on. In between was soccer in the fall, baseball in the spring, and whatever game the neighborhood invented in between. Nobody was keeping stats. Nobody needed to. Playing till dark was the whole point.
Fast forward a couple of decades, and now we’re the ones on the sideline. Our kids play both sports — soccer cleats by the front door, a glove on the back seat that never quite makes it inside — and somewhere along the way we stopped just watching and started coaching. First as the parent who got volunteered, then as the one who actually looked forward to Tuesday practices.
Here’s what surprised us: the meaningful part isn’t the wins. It’s watching a kid who couldn’t stop the ball in September calmly sole it in May. It’s the car ride home when they finally tell you what happened at school because they’re too tired to remember they weren’t going to. It’s watching your kids grow up through sports — a season at a time, a size of cleats at a time. The scoreboard resets every week; the kid doesn’t.
We started We Play Till Dark because the practical stuff was harder to find than it should be. What does a first practice actually look like, minute by minute? What should a first pair of cleats really cost? How do other families run the post-practice wind-down, or keep a team’s schedule straight without losing their minds? The answers exist — they’re just scattered across a hundred sideline conversations.
So this site is our sideline conversation, written down. Practice plans with real minutes and real drills. Gear guides that tell you what matters and what to skip. Routines our own family uses. No hype, no pretending a rec-league Saturday is anything other than what it is — which, honestly, is pretty great already.
We fund the site partly through affiliate links, which never cost you anything extra. You can read exactly how that works on our affiliate disclosure page.
Thanks for being here. Now get them outside — the streetlights aren’t on yet.
